Becoming a real estate agent is a straightforward process, and while each state has its own licensing authority, most states follow a similar path.

Requirements to Become An Agent

Most states have the following requirements to become a licensed agent:

Age

Be at least 18 years old (some require 19), Have a high school diploma or GED

Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident

Complete a State-Approved Pre-Licensing Course

Each state requires a certain number of education hours, ranging from 40 to 180 hours.

Courses can be done online, and many people complete them in 2 to 8 weeks depending on pace.

Pass the Real Estate Exam

The exam is proctored and includes national and state-specific questions.

You’ll schedule this through a testing center like Pearson VUE or PSI, depending on your state.

You must pass both portions to move on.

Submit your Application + Background Check

Most states require fingerprinting and a criminal background check.

You’ll fill out a license application and pay a fee.

Which Class should I sign up For?

Choose the Class That's Right for You

Start out the right way with classes that are self paced. You have 6 months from sign up typically to complete them. We highly recommend keeping to a fixed schedule to complete the coursework. Some people complete them in a week, some it takes longer. Create a SMART goal for you to reach the finish line.
